How does the commissioning process work?

Commissioning artwork is an exciting, collaborative process. The more you know about what to expect and the steps involved, the easier it is to work with any artist and receive a meaningful final piece. Depending on the scope of the project, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks once we have gathered everything we need.

Once we agree upon a general scope and timeline:

Step1:

Determine the size of the canvas you want, and mark it off on your wall with painters tape to ensure it is the right size for your space. While I can get custom sized canvases, it is a much faster process to choose a standard size (16x20, 18x24, 30x40, 48x48, etc).

Step 2:

Browse through my collections, and send me screen shots or jot down the names of the paintings you like. Think about what draws you to them - color, texture, etc. and note any specific elements you would like considered in your final piece. It is also helpful to know things you absolutely do not want in your final work. Hate smooth, rendered clouds? Love the choppy strokes on the road but hate the color? All of this helps inform my process and gives me a feel for your preferences. Send me a reference photo if you have something specific in mind.

Step 3:

Take pictures of the room - include throw pillows, chairs, rugs, and any other elements that will inform the color palette.

Step 4:

Tell me something about yourself. Family, pets, causes near and dear to your heart, charities you support - I'm serious! I love creating for people I know. I want this to be an enjoyable, collaborative process, so if you have trouble with kindness please look elsewhere. Otherwise, let's have fun and get to work!

Step 5:

I will create a mini rough draft and send a picture before I start the real painting. While the final piece will not be exactly the same, it will give you an idea of how it will generally look and feel and we can make any small changes before moving ahead.

Step 6:

Hang your original artwork and enjoy!
